The Yury Dolgoruky nuclear submarine belongs to Russia’s generation of strategic nuclear submarines.
Yury Dolgoruky is the newest submarine in the Borei family.
The Borei-class submarine has a new nuclear reactor system, allowing the ship to dive up to 480 m deep and travel at a diving speed of about 53 km/h.
The ship has a crew of 107 people, including 55 commanders.

The Yury Dolgoruky submarine began being built in 1996, at Russia’s largest shipyard in Severodvinsk, on the banks of the White Sea.
From 2009 to 2012, the submarine participated in sea trials and tests of the Bulava missile, which replaced the Bark.
Then, the Yury Dolgoruky was scheduled to launch but was pushed back a whole year.
Russia has deployed three Borei-class submarines in total.
In May 2012, the Russian Navy signed a contract to develop an upgraded generation of Borei-class missile submarines, which can carry up to 20 intercontinental ballistic missiles, compared to the current version with 16 missiles.
Borei-class submarines are expected to become the core of Russia’s strategic submarine fleet, replacing Project 941 ships (NATO Typhoon class) and Project 667 ships (Delta-3 and Delta-4).
