For more than a week, Huy Dung (Hanoi) has been looking to buy a graphics card to upgrade his computer but has not been able to.
`I went to ask nearly a dozen stores. Some stores were out of stock and only had them available after Tet. Those that were still in stock only sold people to buy a whole PC set, while my need was just to upgrade the computer,` Dung said.
The same situation also happens to people who intend to buy a graphics card recently.
Graphics cards are used in cryptocurrency mining.
This situation causes many computer stores in Vietnam to change the way they sell.
`If you don’t do that, Bitcoin miners will collect goods, leading to real users not being able to buy,` explained Duc Tien, manager at a computer store on Thai Ha street (Hanoi).
`When they buy, they often buy in large quantities, leaving retail buyers without goods,` Mr. Tien said.
The amount of graphics cards imported into Vietnam recently is not enough to meet the needs of the domestic market.
According to a representative of a unit specializing in distributing computer equipment to the Vietnamese market, the lack of goods comes from the manufacturer.

The world’s VGA shortage occurred from around August to October 2020, at the same time that electronic currencies, such as Bitcoin and Ethereum, increased sharply in price again.
According to calculations by Tomshardware, a GeForce RTX 3080 card costing 700 USD can help miners earn an amount of cryptocurrency equivalent to 8.8 USD per day and costs 0.6 USD in electricity.
In 2017, VGA shortage also occurred when Bitcoin price increased to nearly 20 thousand USD.
