Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam said today, February 5, that the measure to quarantine all people from mainland China coming to Hong Kong is to prevent the spread of pneumonia caused by the new coronavirus.
“This is a tough measure.
“Who from the mainland wants to enter Hong Kong and then be quarantined for up to 14 days?
Ms. Lam did not specify the area where Hong Kong expected to gather quarantined people.
Currently, Hong Kong has recorded 21 cases of new coronavirus infection and 1 death.
Speaking to reporters today, Ms. Lam said the Hong Kong government will spend about 1.29 billion USD to deal with the coronavirus outbreak.
`We must unite and put aside our differences, so that we can win the fight against the epidemic,` Ms. Lam emphasized.
Although admitting concern about the spread of coronavirus in Hong Kong, Ms. Lam affirmed that the special zone is still very confident in dealing with the epidemic, because Hong Kong has a strong and well-developed health system.
On February 3, Mrs. Lam announced the closure of 10 out of 13 border gates with mainland China to control the spread of corona virus.
The decision by Hong Kong leaders was made just a few hours after more than 2,500 employees of the Hong Kong Hospital Employees Alliance (HAEA) went on strike, calling for the closure of the border with China and the protection of good medical workers.
However, Hong Kong’s leaders still rejected the possibility of blocking the entire route connecting to mainland China because they believed this would be a `discriminatory, inappropriate and impractical` action.
Taiwan stops entry to mainland Chinese
On February 5, the Taiwanese government announced it would stop allowing mainland Chinese people to enter the country to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus.
Taiwan has effectively stopped accepting most mainland Chinese to the island.
According to the Epidemic Command Center, the new ban on mainland Chinese was introduced because of `the seriousness of the epidemic situation in China and the close exchanges between the mainland and the island`.
Taiwan currently confirms 11 cases of new coronavirus infection.
