Notre Dame Cathedral was built in 1877, completed after 3 years and was awarded the status of minor basilica by the Vatican in 1959 (official name is Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception).
This is a unique architectural work from the French colonial period designed by architect J.Bourard.
Because it is located in the center of District 1 and is the Cathedral of the Archdiocese of Ho Chi Minh City, this is the place where people often gather on holidays and New Year, especially Christmas.
Not only for city residents, Notre Dame Cathedral is also a tourist destination for many international tourists.
At the end of 2016, the City Department of Culture and Sports submitted a proposal to the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee to approve the urgent repair of the tiled roof of Notre Dame Cathedral because it is a religious building and a historical-cultural relic.
The tiled roof of the proposed cathedral is 91 m long, 35 m wide and 57.3 m high.
After the late Archbishop Paul Bui Van Doc offered a mass to pray for peace for the restoration project of Notre Dame Cathedral in Saigon, throughout July 2017, workers installed 27 m high fences and scaffolding.
Throughout this year, a steel company will dismantle the roof tiles, replace rafters, reinforce some iron bars, remove old tiles and cover with new ones, and restore two pointed towers with the cooperation of Eurohaus Company and other experts.
Currently, more than 27,000 Marseille tiles from Monier (France), 84,000 fish scale tiles and nearly 11,000 yin and yang tiles have arrived in Vietnam to serve the restoration of Notre Dame Cathedral.
