Trump retreated to an underground bunker to avoid protests 4
US President Donald Trump spent about an hour in the presidential underground bunker under the White House when hundreds of people gathered outside to protest after the death of black man George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
A law enforcement source said First Lady Melania and youngest son Barron Trump were also taken to the bunker with the President.
The decision to take the President to the bunker was made when protesters confronted secret service agents outside the White House for several hours on May 29.
At times, the crowd pushed down security fences and clashed with security forces armed with shields.
A protester held up a piece of paper with the words `justice for George Floyd` outside the White House on May 29.
The US Secret Service warned protesters about illegal gatherings, before rushing in and using tear gas to disperse the crowd.
The US Secret Service confirmed that more than 60 employees and agents were injured in three days of responding to violent protests outside the White House.
Protests occurred across the United States to express outrage at the death of Floyd, 46, who was arrested by police on May 25 for allegedly consuming a fake $20 bill.
Floyd repeatedly pleaded, saying he couldn’t breathe, but the police officer remained in the same position.
The `I can’t breathe` protest initially broke out in Minneapolis, Minnesota, then spread to many cities across the United States, forcing many mayors to impose curfews and deploy the National Guard to ensure safety.
The mayor of Washington issued a curfew due to the protests, while the mayor of Atlanta asked Trump to stop talking about the protests because he `only makes things worse`.
