On the afternoon of December 27, the Ministry of Education and Training announced a new general education program.
According to the new approach, education is not to impart knowledge but to help students complete work and solve problems in study and life through effective and creative application of learned knowledge.
The new program also overcomes limitations in career orientation for students by clearly distinguishing two stages: basic education (from grades 1 to 9) and career-oriented education (from grades 10 to 12).
During the basic education phase, the program integrates related content of a number of current subjects to create integrated subjects, streamlining and avoiding overlapping educational content.

During the career-oriented education stage, in addition to a number of compulsory subjects and educational activities, students can choose subjects and learning topics that suit their interests, abilities and career orientation.
Mr. Vu Dinh Chuan, Director of the Department of Secondary Education, said that the Ministry of Education will implement the new program for each class.
New program reduces load
The phenomenon of student overload is mentioned a lot in Vietnam.
Regarding learning content, except in a few cases, what Vietnamese students learn is not higher than other countries.
According to the new program’s Compilation Board, the overload stems from a number of reasons, such as: the content is still heavily theoretical and not practical;
The first is to reduce the number of subjects and educational activities.

Second is to reduce the number of classes.
In middle school, students will study 3,070 hours, while under the current program it is 3,124 hours.
Third is the reduction of scholastic knowledge.
In addition, load reduction is also through enhancing differentiated teaching and self-selection;
Regarding the assessment innovation under the new program, especially in the national high school exam, Professor Thuyet said that 2 years ago, the Minister assigned a research group to learn and is reaching the final stage.
Teacher training via the Internet
Answering the question of whether the current teaching staff can meet the requirements of the new general education program, Director of Education Department Hoang Duc Minh said that the Ministry has organized training courses 5 years ago.
The training is based on teachers’ self-study and discussion to resolve problems.
The Director of Education affirmed that there is no shortage of teachers teaching under the new program because the number of teachers for the old and new programs is not much different.
Faced with concerns about insufficient facilities, Director of Facilities Pham Hung Anh said that the middle and high school levels are `relatively secure`, while the primary level is a bit difficult.
According to the National Assembly Resolution, the time to start applying new general education programs and textbooks must be sequential in each educational level, at the latest from the 2020-2021 school year for the first grade of primary school, from the 2020-2021 school year.
