Arsene Wenger spent 19 years leading Arsenal, helping the club win three Premier League titles and six FA Cups.
The last time Arsenal and Wenger won a major title – the Premier League championship in the 2003-2004 season, took place when they were still playing at their old home ground Highbury.
Arsenal’s period of scarce success coincided with the post-Highbury era – the famous football stadium operated from September 1913 to May 2006.
Those difficult years forced Wenger to admit he did not want to repeat the same change.
“If you asked me to do it again, I would say no, let someone else do it.
Wenger had to endure a longer period of frugal spending than before, because the club was forced to adjust to balance its finances after moving to a more majestic stadium that cost a lot of money to build.
`The first few years of my coaching career at Arsenal were relatively easy, from 1996 to 2005. It was a time when everything seemed to go really well. We were always in a top position.
Financial difficulties from building a new stadium forced Wenger to spend austerity, and Arsenal went through many years without a title amid the anxiety and anger of their fans.
Wenger’s current contract with Arsenal expires in 2017, and he has hinted he may leave the club at that time.
`I pledge to do my best until the last day of my contract to bring great success back to Arsenal. I will leave the team one day in a position that someone who comes later can do.`
