How Elon Musk came to Tesla 2
The connection between Elon Musk and Tesla is so great that many people think this company was founded by him.
Tesla founders Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning shared with CNBC about the early days of manufacturing and launching the Tesla Roadster, as well as the journey that brought Elon Musk to his current position.

The two first met Musk at a meeting for members of the Mars Society – a non-profit organization dedicated to human exploration and settlement on Mars, before Musk opened SpaceX in 2002.
In 2003, Eberhard and Tarpenning founded Tesla Motors with the ambition to transform the auto industry.
To realize that dream, Tesla needs capital, but many investors are hesitant.
A year later, Tesla signed a contract with Lotus Cars (UK) to produce racing cars and sports cars.
In 2006, Eberhard stepped down as CEO and became an advisor while Michael Marks, a Tesla investor, served as interim CEO.
In the following years, Tesla had difficulty producing cars, suffered financial losses, made controversial deals… Many people believe that part of the reason is because Elon Musk was distracted by his projects.
In early 2008, Tesla had an internal conflict, leading to the departure of the two co-founders when the company was developing the Model S line. In early August 2008, Musk was also sued by the US Securities Commission and had to pay a fine of 20 USD.

Elon Musk is the fourth CEO of Tesla.
In October 2008, Musk became CEO of Tesla and decided to lay off 25% of employees.
In 2009, co-founder Martin Eberhard accused Elon Musk of `rewriting` Tesla history.
As an electrical engineer and inventor, Eberhard is working on technology that will make electric vehicle batteries cheaper than they are today without sacrificing safety, power or quality.
Meanwhile, Tarpenning said he still talks to Musk sometimes.
