Suspicion that the US made a fatal mistake in Kabul 2
US officials said an MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) followed the car for many hours before opening fire to destroy the target on August 29.
The US military called this a `correct air strike`, launched after many hours of surveillance targeting a car suspected of carrying explosives and operated by a suicide bomber from the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS).

The scene of the airstrike and security camera images show Ahmadi activities on August 29.
However, images from security cameras and testimony from witnesses show that it is likely that the US military launched the attack without knowing the target, leading to the deaths of 10 innocent civilians.
US military officials said they could not determine the identity of the driver when the UAV opened fire, but assessed that this person showed suspicious signs when he arrived at an IS facility and put what was believed to be explosives into the vehicle.
The New York Times said the driver was Zemari Ahmadi, a longtime employee of the US-based relief organization Nutrition and Education International (NEI).
The US Department of Defense said that the airstrike killed 3 civilians, when in reality the number was 10 people, including 7 children.
Zemari Ahmadi has worked as an electrical engineer for NEI since 2006. Relatives said Ahmani left at 9:00 a.m. in a 1996 NEI sedan, starting from his house in the Kwaja Burga area a few kilometers from Kabul airport.
US officials said the UAV began tracking the target during this time, after it left the compound believed to be a hideout of IS forces near the airport.
It is unclear which stop US officials were referring to on Ahmadi’s journey. He picked up two colleagues and went to pick up his laptop before going to the NEI office.
`We have lived here for 40 years, have nothing to do with IS or terrorism. We love America,` this person said.
The MQ-9 aircraft followed Ahmadi’s car as he drove around Kabul.
After stopping to buy breakfast, Ahmadi and two colleagues arrived at NEI’s office at 9:35 a.m.
Half an hour later, Ahmadi went out with a hose and filled several plastic buckets.

Ahmadi family members next to the car destroyed in an air strike on August 29.
At 3:38 p.m., the car was removed from its parking location.
US officials said the UAV tracked the target in a residential area 8-12 km southwest of the airport, a location that coincided with the NEI office.
Passengers confirmed that on the bus there were only laptops and boxes of water previously brought by Ahmadi.
The journey home was still filled with laughter and joking among colleagues, the only difference was that Ahmadi did not turn on music because he was worried about being harassed by the Taliban.
US military officials admitted at that time that they still did not know Ahmadi’s identity, but believed that the white sedan posed an imminent threat to soldiers at Kabul airport.
The target was in a densely populated area, but the UAV crew checked the surroundings and saw only one man greeting the vehicle.
The US UAV airstrike took place days after a suicide bomber from the Islamic State Khorasan, IS’s branch in Afghanistan, carried out an attack on US troops at Kabul airport on May 26.
`We are aware of reports of civilian casualties following an attack on a vehicle in Kabul. It is unclear what may have happened and we are investigating further. We would be deeply saddened if this occurred.`
